All for One
Mixed Media on Road Sign
600mm x 1200mm
"I never paint just one story...more like many strands of stories & perceptions intertwined together. A Chinese immigrant boy, was the model for this painting, but like my other road -sign works it is not meant to be a portrait. It's more the feel of the boy which fascinated me and compelled me to ask to paint him. His little friend, also Chinese wrote the characters, which I copied. I was told later that they are not quite correct, but it was a great moment with him, so I left it. They were meant to stand for journey, courage & family."
The green highway sign turned on its side seemed relevant to a sense of displacement that they still had, in green New Zealand ....and the red line could be interpreted as an umbilical chord to origin and culture...
