John Appleton
Johns work stems from his deep interest in the range of human emotions and diverse states of mind.
Using portraiture, with distortions of emblems, icons and motifs John explores transformations through animated characters created from elements of found ornamentation. The works merge and combine elements of classicism and realism and parallel the fragility and containment of expression in our society.
Involved with notions of surrealism, but anchored within the physical and slightly macarbe, his characters contain a presence or sculptural essence.
For example his work ''The King'' demonstrates a parallel to our own society. Abruptly disjointed, cut off, beheaded (yet alive) and detached from his environment, he is transported to another world and to the sterility of the canvas.
In this way John symbolises our human vulnerabilities and emotions through a visual, physical relationship with dreamlike objects and visionary art.
