Simon Morrison Deaker - 08
Simons March 2008 show exhibited stunning artwork from a series that also featured on the Partisan wine label.
The Partisan wine label draws from earlier explorations into the hearaldry and culture of a post colonial New Zealand. These new works of Simons draw further on the melding of cultures and the establishment of our own identities. These themes are found in subtle icons of our industrial and personal environments, the fauna and birds both native and introduced and compositions familiar to our heritage. Set against heavy black canvas with the trademark scripture the paintings are a perspective of our environments with renaissance and heritage.
PARTISAN WINE - Committed without Compromise
Partisan is committed to pinot noir, believes without question or compromise in the ties between land, history, wine, art and grape.
This hard to grow grape has such mana that it is seen, especially in Central Otago, as a taonga or a treasure beyond price.
Simon Deaker's stunning art for the Partisan label captures this royalty and challege that the "black queen" puts to the winemaker. The label also represents New Zealand's bi-cultural heritage, its Maori/pakeha traditions.
Partisan wine represents 21st century southern New Zealand: the best old world grapes turned into worldleading wines from flinty soils, searing summers, and frigid winters.
